Media Info
Available for: Single MP3 or WMA Files

Media Info displays tag and file information for MP3 Audio and Windows Media Audio (WMA) files on a submenu. Right-click any .mp3 or .wma file, move the mouse to Media Info on the ShellToys XP menu, and you'll see the following information displayed:

  • Song title
  • Artist
  • Composer
  • Album title
  • Track number
  • Year
  • Genre
  • Duration
  • Sample Rate
  • Bit Rate
  • Channels (mono/stereo)
  • Above these items you'll see a Play/Edit (for MP3 files) or Play (WMA files) item. Click this item, or any of the information items, to open ShellToys' built-in audio player and MP3 ID3v1 tag editor.

    Player/Editor window
The player includes standard button-controls for Start, Pause and Stop. The 4th button displays or hides track and file information, grouped onto two tabbed pages. If the current file is an MP3 audio file, the track details can be edited (see below). Drag the slider to change the wave volume of your soundcard.

Keyboard users can press Ctrl+P to play or pause, Ctrl+S to stop, and Page Up/Page Down to show or hide the information panel.

You can also drag-and-drop MP3 and WMA files into the open window to play them.

To close the player window at any time, press Esc or double-click the progress-bar. The window remembers its screen position, and will start at the same position on next use.

When the window opens, the track will begin to play automatically. You can switch off auto-play for this window by removing the check-mark beside Play media files automatically on the Options page of the ShellToys XP Settings window.

    Editing MP3 ID3v1 Tags
To edit the tag information for the current MP3 file, display the track and file information in the player window by pressing the Page Down key, and edit or add the details such as track title and album name on the first tabbed page. When you're done, click the Change button to save the audio file with the new details. (If the song is playing when you click Change, it will be stopped.)

Tags cannot be edited for WMA files.
